Co-creation Workshop on Social Innovation Design of Trolleys for Cleaners
|
The 3-day “Co-creation Workshop on Design of Trolleys for Cleaners” has successfully concluded. With the support of our strategic partners, “Ngau Tau Kok Caritas Centre” and “Hong Kong Food and Environmental Hygiene Department Staff Rights Union”, 33 students and participants from different disciplines such as design, rehabilitation sciences, social welfare, academia, construction, engineering, etc. engaged in observations and interactions with cleaners in the Kwun Tong community, which fostered their understanding and empathy.
Using design thinking toolkits, participants brainstormed ideas, created sketches, and collaborated to produce 4 trolley prototypes. A simple field test of these prototypes was conducted within the Poly U campus and the neighboring off-campus community.
The overwhelming public participation marks the beginning of an ongoing co-creation process, where different sectors will contribute to the co-design team led by social designer Mr Chan Ka Hing. The team will continue to implement and refine the trolley design concepts, taking into consideration the actual needs of cleaners. The ultimate goal is to alleviate their physical strain and ensure their work is safe and dignified.

Techincal Report on the Deconstruction, Relocation and Reinstallation of MiC Modules in Nam Cheong 220 Transitional Housing Project
|
To alleviate the issue of housing shortage and provide rapid and short-term accommodation, the government has planned to complete 84 transitional housing projects and provide over 21,000 housing units by 2024-25. Among these projects, 35 projects will be constructed using the Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) technology. Nam Cheong 220, which stands as Hong Kong's first modular social housing project, has been relocated to Wong Yue Tan in Tai Po since mid-2023, marking the beginning of its second life cycle.
In collaboration with the Construction Industry Council, J.C.DISI has been commissioned to conduct a study on the technical aspects of MiC disassembly, reusability, and relocation for Nam Cheong 220. The findings are compiled in a video, along with six technical recommendations, aimed at providing practical references for future relocatable housing initiatives.

Safety Guidelines for Waste Pickers
|
J.C.DISI has been dedicated to supporting the work of waste pickers. With the support of the Vera Ruttonjee Desai Charitable Fund, we collaborated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church Social Service - Hong Kong and Pickers' Platform of Mission To New Arrivals Limited to co-organise the project. Through this initiative, we donated dozens of recycling trolleys to waste pickers in the North District and Kowloon District, while also providing them with health and social services.
Recently, we partnered with the Hong Kong Art and Design Community to release a video on safety guidelines for waste pickers, covering topics such as correct trolley handling posture, road safety rules, appropriate clothing and equipment, and tips for preventing heatstroke.
