Learning & Teaching Expo 2026 | Shaw STEAMS for Good and ASCEND Tech for Good Scheme Showcasing "SoInno Impact"

The Learning & Teaching Expo 2026 successfully wrapped up in June, and the PolyU Jockey Club Design Institute for Social Innovation (J.C.DISI) booth was buzzing with energy! Alongside passionate teachers, students, and youth-led startups, we proudly showcased how knowledge and creativity can be transformed into real-world solutions.
At the heart of our showcase was the Shaw STEAMS for Good Programme. We demonstrated how we bring social innovation and PolyU interdisciplinary research directly into classrooms through co-developed curriculum spanning sustainable urban design, campus biodiversity, future food and more.
The true stars of the show were our five core schools. Students wowed the crowd of educators and professionals by pitching their own creative works. Highlights included anti-collision flyover films to protect butterflies, shelter models built with PolyU’s eco-cement, and even healthy ice cream crafted from banana peels!
Our young innovators sparked vibrant exchanges, leaving visitors inspired by how the "Social" (S) element can be woven into STEAM. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to celebrate the power of socially minded education!

In addition, our three ASCEND Tech for Good Scheme youth-led startups brought incredible energy to the Learning & Teaching Expo 2026, proving that technology is a powerful force for social good.
UX Gym impressed visitors with their newly launched "Digital Literacy Community Hub" and hosted a workshop sharing frontline tips on cultivating primary students' digital competencies. Meanwhile, EMPowerAI Lab demonstrated how AI can empower ethnic minority communities to overcome language barriers, and Tech Buddies showcased their heartwarming model that promotes digital inclusion by connecting generations through technology and learning.
Throughout the event, our passionate young teams exchanged ideas with eager educators and industry partners, sparking fresh conversations on using technology to tackle real-world social needs. ASCEND is incredibly proud to fuel these youth-led innovations as we continue to bridge the digital divide and co-create a more inclusive digital future for everyone!

Geospatial Social Innovation | LandsD x PolyU RILS x J.C.DISI: Co-creating Social Value through Knowledge Transfer
|
The Special Interest Group on Geospatial Social Innovation (SIG-GSI) was officially established in July! Stemming from the MoU signed between PolyU and the Lands Department last September, this joint initiative was formed by the PolyU Research Institute for Land and Space (RILS) and the Survey and Mapping Office (SMO) of the Lands Department, with J.C.DISI as a collaborating institution to drive government-academia-research synergy and knowledge transfer.
Over the next two years, the group will focus on community planning, social inclusion, and walkability studies, ultimately showcasing the achievements of combining geospatial technologies with social innovation. A key initiative is the "Walkin’HK" geospatial web application, designed to address the diverse mobility needs of the public, particularly the elderly, carers, and individuals with special needs, to strengthen community belonging, resilience, and social cohesion.

Memory Spectrum | Co-creating a Dementia-Friendly Community in Choi Hung Estate
|
As Choi Hung Estate gears up for redevelopment, J.C.DISI’s "Memory Spectrum" project is stepping in to support elderly residents with dementia and their families through this major transition. By blending medical-social care with arts and youth volunteering, we are building a warm, dementia-friendly community network to ease the relocation process.
The project has already connected with over 5,000 participants! In our "Community Co-creation Toolkit Design Workshop," 60 passionate minds from the social, education, and government sectors used design thinking to brainstorm eight practical action plans for the neighborhood. Meanwhile, local seniors and students from CCC Kei Wa Primary School teamed up to sculpt beautiful ceramic artworks celebrating their collective memories of Choi Hung, which were proudly showcased at the HSBC Hong Kong Community Festival.
Looking ahead, these co-created ideas will be transformed into a practical community toolkit, supporting residents through relocation while preserving social connections and collective memories.

ASCEND Tech for Good Scheme｜UX Gym Launching Digital Literacy Community Hub
|
UX Gym, an ASCEND youth-led programme organised by Gamenoodlesoup, launched its extension initiative, the Digital Literacy Community Hub in April. Partnering with Chi Lin Buddhist Primary School, the project bridges the digital divide for students with fewer opportunities. Through gamified and interactive activities, it nurtures critical thinking, problem-solving, and safe technology use, extending learning beyond the classroom to families and the wider community.
The initiative has garnered strong support across sectors, with its launch ceremony attracting nearly 300 educators, community partners, teachers, students and parents, marking a key step in bringing digital literacy from schools into the broader community.
Moving forward, UX Gym will engage more schools and partners to promote digital competency in daily life. By encouraging students, parents, and community members to learn together, the project aims to foster digital confidence, adaptability, and resilience, building a more inclusive digital future.

WSBE 2026｜An Exchange Journey on Sustainable Built Environment and Social Innovation between Hong Kong and Melbourne
|
The World Sustainable Built Environment Conference (WSBE2026) was successfully held in Melbourne in June! J.C.DISI was honoured to share Hong Kong’s social innovation practices on this international stage and connect with experts from around the world.
During the conference, Ms Karen Lee, Senior Manager of J.C.DISI introduced the "Jockey Club Intergenerational Play Space" Project, showcasing how existing urban land resources can be strategically optimised through user-centric design to promote healthy ageing and foster sustainable communities. (SDGs 3 and 11). Prof. Ling Kar-kan, former Director presented how Hong Kong’s Transitional Housing Programme serves as a global model for SDG 17 (Partnerships), strategically using Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) to achieve unprecedented speed in building relocatable housing on idle land.
In addition, Karen and Prof. Ling joined the "Journey to World Sustainable Built Environment (WSBE) Conference — Hong Kong Green Building Professionals’ Delegation to Melbourne" organised by the BEAM Society.
