Subject: Introducing the PolyU GenAI App: ChatGPT and the Bing Chat Service

Date: 27 July 2023

Dear Colleagues and Students

We are pleased to introduce the PolyU GenAI App: ChatGPT and the Bing Chat Service.

As part of PolyU's commitment to embracing generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) as a positive and creative force in education, we are launching a three-month trial of GenAI tools, specifically ChatGPT for all staff and students, via the PolyU GenAI App beginning on 1 August 2023. In the meantime, the Bing Chat service is also available for free.

Service scope:

Our services cover intelligent chatbots, business or professional writing, text summarization, language translation, code generation and intelligent search powered by ChatGPT and Bing Chat.

Accessibility and security:

The PolyU GenAI App will be accessible via desktops/ laptops or personal smartphones over the Internet. ChatGPT supports popular browsers like Chrome, Safari and Microsoft Edge, while Bing Chat requires the Edge browser or the Bing app on mobile phones.

Data security is our priority. Our ChatGPT service, hosted on the Microsoft Azure Cloud, has been configured to opt out from OpenAI’s data logging and human review processes. Additionally, the traffic flow between PolyU and the Cloud is encrypted.

Fair use policy:

The University covers fees associated with using ChatGPT on the Microsoft Azure Cloud. To ensure fair use, each staff member and student will have a monthly quota of 500 thousand tokens for chat conversations.

Getting started with the PolyU GenAI App:

To start using the PolyU GenAI App, please log in with your PolyU NetID and visit https://GenAI.polyu.edu.hk from 1 August 2023. To allow GenAI tools to generate responses meeting your needs, please read our Hints & Tips on Using ChatGPT and Microsoft Bing Chat User Guide.

With the rapid evolution of the GenAI tools landscape, the University will continue to monitor developments throughout this trial period. This opportunity enables us to explore new pedagogies and assessment approaches as well as improve writing skills. A review of a long-term subscription arrangement will be conducted around the end of September 2023.

Your feedback is invaluable to us. Please share your thoughts anytime via the PolyU GenAI App's feedback function to help us refine our direction and establish best practices.

We look forward to your participation and comments.

With regards,

Professor Kwok-yin Wong
